Three Freeways Meet in One Interchange

Heavy Duty Towing in Riverside starts with an interchange. The city of 314,998 people (2020 census) is the Riverside County seat, incorporated on October 11, 1883, and about 50 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. State Route 91, State Route 60 and Interstate 215 meet at a multi-level interchange in northeastern Riverside. Semis, buses, RVs and equipment haulers pass through all day. Dispatch answers 24/7.

The 91, the 60 and the 215

The Riverside Freeway, SR 91, ends at exit 65B, where it joins I-215 south (Escondido Freeway) and SR 60 east (Moreno Valley Freeway). SR 60 west toward Los Angeles is exit 65C. On I-215, the freeway overlaps SR 60 for about five miles through Riverside, including past the UC Riverside campus, and it splits from SR 60 at SR 91 near downtown. Flyovers carry I-215 southbound traffic. Exit 32B serves University Avenue, exit 30A leads to Box Springs Road and Fair Isle Drive, and exits 27A and 27B serve Cactus Avenue and Alessandro Boulevard. When you call, name the freeway and the exit sign you passed. Overlapping routes confuse a driver in a hurry, and on some stretches the I-215 mileposts take over.

March Air Reserve Base

March Air Reserve Base borders Riverside on the east and separates the city from Moreno Valley. It was founded in 1918 and is the oldest operating Air Force base west of the Mississippi River. The city's top-employer list shows March Air Force Reserve with 9,750 employees. The base and nearby industrial parks, including Hunter, Sycamore Canyon and Airport, generate delivery trucks, buses and equipment.

East on the 60

East of Moreno Valley, SR 60 runs through the hill country that locals call the Badlands. A Riverside County Transportation Commission and Caltrans project added truck climbing lanes in both directions at Gilman Springs Road and Jack Rabbit Trail. It started in summer 2019 and finished in May 2022 at a cost of $138 million. A truck that stalls on a grade needs a different approach than one on flat pavement.

Fire country

Wikipedia reports that FEMA ranks Riverside County among the highest wildfire risk areas in California. Box Springs Mountain is one of the preserved open spaces on the city's hills. If smoke or closures are around you, say so and we plan the route around them.

The river and the rails

The city is named for its place beside the Santa Ana River. Amtrak's Southwest Chief serves the city, and Metrolink has three stations: Riverside-Downtown, Riverside-La Sierra and Riverside-Hunter Park/UCR.

Start with these details

  • Freeway, direction, and the last exit or interchange you passed
  • Unit, weight and load
  • Whether the vehicle is blocking traffic, in a ditch or on a ramp
  • The cause of the breakdown
  • Who pays: owner-operator, fleet, broker or insurer

If it rolls over

A rollover or a truck down an embankment may need a rotator. Published rate sheets list rotators at about $790 to $1,500 per hour, and heavy recovery with a wrecker at about $350 to $850 per hour. Rates vary by unit, distance, scene and time of day. Your written invoice estimate is the price.
